Nursing home

Location : Húsavík, Iceland

Project : Nursing home / Competition

Architecture : UNDRA, Andrew Burgess & André Motta (assistance)

Size : 4.400 m²

The concept is based on current ideas about the operation and design of nursing homes such as The Eden ideology, which emphasizes on the quality of life, well-being of residents and staff. Also to create a homely environment where residents can continue to live their lives in the most normal way, even though the environment is specially designed having their changed circumstances in mind.

The main motive of the proposal is to create a home and work environment where the building and its immediate surroundings contribute to well-being, peace of mind, security and a joy of life, which at the same time reduces the risk of loneliness and boredom.

With a variety of common living spaces, both indoor and outdoor, the individual's expression and freedom are supported.

In addition to designing a nursing home that contains the qualities described above, a great emphasis is placed on design flexibility so that changes can be made to the internal structure to cope with the changes and emphases that the future will bring.
